Leveraging An Old, Trusted Domain

If you start off with an old, trusted domain, create a handful of subdomains - each of which will feature substantial content that is unique to it - and link to these subdomains from the main domain in a prominent manner, would this be likely to shorten the subdomains' stay in the TrustBox as compared to just starting entirely new domains from scratch?

It seems like there are a lot of conflicting opinions on this topic. Looking for input from anyone who has actually tried this recently.

Yep, lots of conflicting stuff out there about it.

<.02> yes it is "safer" to use the subdomain method</.02>

I would however, seek links fast and hard from external sources to those subdomains.
