I found this very strange. While looking for the total number of page indexing in google of one of my friends website(site:example.com) what I found was that the total number of pages comes shown on the first page is more than 5000 pages but as soon as I go to the second page it shows 270 pages.

What can be the possible reason for this?

System: The following message was spliced on to this thread from: http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3270110.htm [webmasterworld.com] by tedster - 11:42 pm on Mar. 4, 2007 (EST -5)

I was hoping for some clarification on this:

In some cases, a site: search doesn't show a full list of results even when the pages are different, and we are resolving that issue as well.

The mystery now seems to be officially resolved -- it's definitely a bug. Thanks netmeg, and thanks Vanessa.
