Setting the Googlebot Crawl Rate

After waiting for a reason to subscribe to G's webmaster tools (I realize I am late to the game on this one). I saw that you can slow the rate of crawls by googlebot.

This is tempting because we get massive bandwidth bills a couple times a year.

So ... my questions are:

- will this significantly slow down google finding new pages on our sites?

- will there be any bandwith savings to make it worthwhile?

- any horror stories?
