Once a search query is received from a user, a standard index is searched based on the search query. The standard index forms part of a set of replicated standard indexes having multiple instances of the standard index. A signal is then determined based on the search of the standard index. When the received signal meets predefined criteria, an extended index is searched. The extended index forms part of a set of extended indexes having at least one instance of the extended index. There are fewer instances of the extended index than instances of the standard index. Extended search results are then obtained from the extended index and at least a portion of the extended search results is transmitted towards a user.

I think this may be googles answer to webmasters using different titles as compared to other sites for the same content... and maybe an answer to visitors searching for things with a different word order than the next visitor.
It would basicaly mean that google has figured out that blue widgets and widgets blue are one and the same and they will group the search results from both. Since there can't be two #1 sites or two #2 sites etc in one set of results.... I guess well soon find out.

This patent was filed in Sept 2003 so it's implementation might already be in G algorithm as we see it today. Then again just because G has a patent on this does not mean that they implemented the stuff (as a whole or in parts). It's interesting none the less....
