Does anyone have any ideas about google's handling of .name domain names compaired to .com's?

Any sources to back up claims would be appreciated.

Also I heard that domains registered for longer (i.e 10 years) were treated better than thouse registered for 1 or 2. Is there any truth in this, is it true of all domain types and again are there any links where I can find out more?

Many thanks,

Tim

There are no preferences among domains who are accessible to everyone to register.
Only government and educational domains (so basically gov, edu, mil & int) have some advantage due to built-in trust factor.

The other issue you bring up is whether a multi-year registration period is a signal of quality for Google. This came into focus because Google mentions it as one of many factors in their 2005 patent for the use of historical data in ranking. (See this thread for a discussion [webmasterworld.com])

Whether this factor is actually in play right now is open for debate -- a debate we held here last November:
