Does anyone know if there is a connection between Google PR and Alexa ranking? I've been tweaking my website for months trying to improve both and just this week my alexa ranking improved greatly and I finally have PR of 3 on my homepage which had 0 just a few days ago.

Thanks

I personally doubt it. I ban Alexa, yet do very well with Google PR's of 6-8, plus very optimal search results.

No there is ni DIRECT connection.

Normally(*), more Pagerank means more links, more visitor and more traffic and thus your site will have better Alexa rank.

(*) Pagerank and Alexa rank means nothing about traffic, site quality or anything more up to very high levels

Toolbar PageRank is a very crude measure of link popularity.

Alexa rankings are a very crude measure of traffic trends.

Trying to link the two would probably end up with (very crude)^2.

Not worrying about either is probably going to do you more good (by freeing up your time) than trying to figure either/both out.

Of course, the BIG traffic sites tend to have a high PR but you can't use that as proof of anything.

How then should one determine what sites are worthwhile to establish reciprocal links with?

How then should one determine what sites are worthwhile to establish reciprocal links with?

1) Look at the site in question to see if the content is relevant to your site and if the site would be beneficial for your site's visitors.

2) Repeat the WW manta 10 times: "Build your site for visitors, NOT for search engines!"

I'm curious bobothecat, why do you ban Alexa? Or why does anyone ban any of the crawlers, bots etc?

Thanks for the welcome!

There is no connection between Alexa and Google.

Alexa rankings are based off a sampling of Alexa Toolbar users (like the Neilson Ratings). They are updated weekly.

PR rankings are based on a secret formula used by Google based on relavent backlinks, site age, and other items. PR's update every 3 or 4 months. They just completed the majority of their PR rankings last week.

why ban Alexa, that's real easy. If you are working on a site that is in a very competitive market ( or one that has $$$ ) then you need to stay under the radar from them, till they notice you, since you are exploiting a weakness of theirs, they will attack and fix their weakness.
Your goal is to exploit it until you show up and someone with some muscle, then their is nothing they can do.

p.s. do a Google search for the baning scripts

centime:
Staying under the radar gives you a slight edge, and in the fields that certain people play ( example is Markus007 in the dating/matchmaking field ) it could just give you that lead time you need.

I for one helped a friend, he was in stealth mode for about 4 months, those 4 month he was able to build his link directory, improve his site, get general feedback and reviews his site against his competitors. Now, he does not sit high in the search rankings ( top 20 ) but he's getting write-ups within his field. Soon enough he's going to be to 10 ( 6 to 9 months from now ) but the rest of his industry has to play catch-up to him.

that's what stealth in the b2b or c2c can do for you if you have the staying power to play

No, PageRank is based on a published algoritm, that is far from secret. There are a couple of variables that we do not know the value of.

Google has also implemented some ways to block PR from being passed from some pages, and might have added some delays in passing it. But the basic PR calculation is still the same and available for anyone to read and understand. There is no reason for Google to change it.

There is no correlation between the two. I have several sites that made big jumps in Alexa this week, PR is still the same (as it has been for the past year or so now for established sites).
