Every other site: search provides different results

every time I do a site: search, I get something different. I'm guessing it's different datacenters or something, but one search will show a full page of results, say 1-10 of 50,000.

The next search will show 1-4 of 50,000.

The next will show just the index page but you'll see the message saying, "click here to see omitted results".

I'm guessing my site is headed back to being supplemental again?

If someone could address this I would appreciate it.

As you can tell, I'm fairly ignorant about this stuff (still, after all this time!).
