With about 25 words on the page and one external link to the authority on that industry, I leapt into position 1 for my number one keyword (out of a couple of million results and with the other 20 odd words on the page targeted about 70 other keyword combinations (adding about 50 words in an html list).
I linked to the site using different anchor text from about 3 sites I own. I put one adsense module on the page.
Expecting the sandbox, it didnt kick in for two weeks (I probably looked like a thin affiliate) and I have bombed out, probably not to return for about 3 months, I would think.
Some observations:
1. Google ignored the meta-tag for ranking. Although I was no.27 out of millions for the one phrase keyword for a time, google didnt return me for anyhitng in my meta-descrition with "quotes", and may have even applied a filter to one keyword which was in the meta-description. Proof positive that your meta desription in my opinion should only be used for visitors and indeed might not contain keyword phrases you are targetting (leave your title for that!)
2. Without doubt the title was the single most important on page factor.
3. I was reminded although alarmed even if my site had 9 words out of a 10 word query in Google, ie quite relevent, it woudnt show up on a 10 word search where one of the words was not present on my site even if there were no other results at all. I would have assumed Google would have thought my page 90% relevant in this case and returned it, but no.
