Dropping 125K Amazon Product Feed URLs - Google Penalty?

Got hired to clean up a site. At the top of my list is removing some 125K indexed Amazon Product Feed pages which have been running on the site for a few years with the old amazon cgi/mod rewrite technique.

Anyone have comments on how G responds to dropping out of index thousands and thousands of pages all at once? This site is going to be a 404 machine for months to come, even with an updated robots.txt file.

APF aside, what are peoples thoughts of dropping out (NOT IN) large amounts of database driven web pages?

For me, I'm paranoid and feel like there are G triggers out there which look for sudden reductions in vast amounts of data and depending upon site trust could be a bad thing.

But hey - aren't we all paranoid about a few things?

I would like to hear anyone's experience with removing a hundred K or so of web pages and learn if it's a safe thing to do.
