Ranking well on Google UK

Different listing in .co.uk to .com

One of my customers sites lists on page 2 in Google.com for a specific search term, although is down on page 8 in .co.uk.

How does Google know if a .com domain comes from the UK or not? and is it worth buying a .co.uk domain and pointing it at the site?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jo

<insert obligatory steveb snipe about how bad Google is here>

If it's a UK site with a .com extension, firstly make sure the site is hosted in the UK.

If you have a .com it has to be hosted on a UK server to stand any chance of ranking on google.co.uk

On the basis that this .com you are talking about is hosted on a UK server, then the scenario you mention is not new to me.

I'm sure you'll get lot's of people saying you should have a .co.uk if your site is UK targeted, but in reality that just isn't the case and isn't necessary.

In sectors I observe 70-80% of the top 10 on google.co.uk is made up of UK hosted .com's.

Is the .com you are talking about a relatively new site or has it had some relatively recent link building done on it?

I have recently done some link building and changed keywords and was really happy with the results in Google.Com.

But, the site is hosted in Germany.

The site has a large backend database and would be an absolute pain to move server.

What do you think about a bridge site hosted on a uk server?

Thanks

If possible, make sure that the new links to your site are from UK sites, i.e. hosted in the UK and/or ".co.uk" TLD...

That is my next stategy.

Thanks UK web guy

I have bought a .co.uk domain and have pointed it to the site, I take on board what you say, but I think itīs worth a try.

It may not work, but thereīs no harm in trying - is there?

Iīll let you know if it makes a difference.
