Using literary quotes as SEO?

Used to keep the content fresh

I recently made a few changes to a site (about a month ago) and now notice most of my keywords are no longer listed in top position for Google. I'm not sure if the things I did were the reason, or whether Google has made any serious changes.

One of the things I did was to create a quotations database, and then have each of my pages within the site load a random quote below the footer. These quotes are related to the content of course, but i still wonder if this can be causing problems?

Is something like this an obvious no-no, in the sense that it updates the page too often?

What are your thoughts?

Anyone, please? I'm thinking it may have hurt my rankings, and if so, I'd like to get rid of it immediately.

Is this kind of thing done frequently, and does it work?

I'd really appreciate any feedback here.

If your quote is random - make it only change once a day at most. Not sure about the SE benefit or damage you may have done - but I'm sure that no search engine wants to index a page which will be different even seconds later!

crap, I never really gave it much thought, but it does sound logical.

I mean, I know a lot of people have been affected in the past couple of weeks, in regards to SE rankings, but I just want to make sure it's not anything that I might've done. If so, I'll get rid of it.

Thanks a bunch for your input!
