I had some thoughts on how Google views the use and abuse of the “no index, no follow” tags.

There are some good uses of the no index, no follow tag. Google will show a lot of love to your site if you use the tags in the following ways:

1.To prevent indexing of duplicated content
2.If you run a Blog or message board to prevent link spam
3.To prevent photographs from being indexed to save bandwidth

There are also some bad uses of the no index, no follow tags as well. Just because you are telling Google not to index or follow the links, Google still crawls and looks at the page and it is more than likely still used in calculating rankings and still can hurt you! Recently I have seen abuse of this tag in the following ways:

1.Affiliate linking
2.Link Exchanges
3.Deceptive content
4.Pages stuffed with irrelevant text and thousands of keywords
5.Three/Four/Five way linking schemes
6.Deceptive doorway pages

Most of the sites who abuse the no index, no follow tag are under some sort of penalty and perform very poorly in serps. So if you find yourself suddenly slipping in the serps and are abusing the no index, no follow tag, you need to really ask yourself if it is worth it.
