Selling static links

Can it hurt your SE rankings?

I've been asked to sell static links on my web site. I would like to know if it can hurt my search engine rankings? How many links is considered to be OK to sell?

I believe selling links alone does not hurt rankings, but....and it's a Big But:

1) If you end up having links on your site that lead to spammy sites, bad neighborhoods, off topic sites, etc....that could hurt you.
2) Best not to advertise the fact you are doing it.

Just remeber the dirone directory and some others:
Manual punishment of PR0 by selling PR disguised as directory listings.
Same could go for selling "links".
