Free Web Directory Gets Zero'd - Anybody else?

Is this just with my site (and a few others I've looked at) or is it more widespread? It got me thinking anyway but it might be a good thing if it were widespread.

My site went from 5-6 today (at the moment at least!) - backlinks halved though proof positive that PR isnt about the number of links it's about the quality of them - I've spotted like I said my directory zeroing. I generally dont like directories unless they are actually useful - ie perhaps part of a main site - a links directory of sort but to relevant and useful other places.

The only reason some of these directories exist is to massage PR and link count - they exist for Google. Surely this is against Google advice, widely quoted. Surely they will get hit at some point?

I've noticed a few big name seo companies in the UK are zero'd as of today.

Wouldnt it be nice if Google did zero a lot of these directories, and vapourised their weight? Most of the ones the big boy seo companies are in them but you need to pay nowadays which is a problem for small businesses.

If a lot of these directories zero, and their weight diminishes or vanishes, and penalties arise from obvious bad neighbourhoods, it really would level the playing field regarding IBL and Page Rank etc.

Then only the seos creating origional useful and syndicated content would be rewarded (like a lot of new starts are trying to do) and it would clean up the serps (if reflected here in say 3 months - giving everyone time to put efforts into adding content to their site rather than chasing links only).

I might be way off the mark here - it was just an unformulated thought! Am I going slightly mad?
