Which is the best error message to use

hi, we have a new site about 7 months old that has about 30000 pages out of a possible 50000 pages indexd in google, over the weekend we changed the file format from asp to aspx, which is the best error message we should use? at the moment we have a 404 message showing with a link back to the home page but was wondering if this would cause us any problems in with google

You could always do a 301 redirect for your users and the search engines appear to follow them as well. If all you changed was asp to aspx then it should be quite simple.
