HTTP errors and Not Found in Google Webmaster Tools

Does google quickly de-index URLs which return a true .410?

At the moment I have around 70 old pages that Google has slowly started removing from the index.

Each of these pages returns a true .410:

Gone
The requested resource
/red-widget.html
is no longer available on this server and there is no forwarding address. Please remove all references to this resource.

Is this the best way of ensuring that these pages will be banished from the index forever?

Also, should I be worried that Google Webmaster Tools currently lists 16 of these pages as 'HTTP errors / 410 (Gone)' and a further 9 pages as '404 (Not found)'?
