Links disappear

Is Duplicate content causing this?

Every 4-6 weeks or so I seem to get indexed and my inurl reports around 20,000 or so links, However after a week or so these disappear and I end up with very few URL's about 180! This latter figure seems to relate to the links on my front page. This has been happening for the last 12 months or so. I understand that I have a lot of links on my front page, but in essence this has been the case for the last 3 years or so.

Traffic to the site drops by about 20-30% and I just cannot figure out what is happening. Would appreciate some pointers as I am sat here pulling my hair out, I am getting advice that it may be duplicate content but am not convinced.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Jay

Jay,

How many pages do you return a 404 for and why do you have 5 copies of your homepage in the index?

Hi,

Didn't know I had 5 instances of my homepage. Didn't know it was possible for that to happen?

I get 5929 404's returned.

Regards,
Jay

I hope I don't sound silly to you but I am confused about the whole 5 pages in the index. Could you please explain?

Sorry Tedster I didn't mean to start a site review, just be of some help.

The causes of blinking urls (I have no better name), as I have seen.

New urls to the index, (mass URL renaming via rewrite rules can also do this).

Pages being moved between Google data centers (nothing new there).

Pages leaving the index, (maybe of the 404 variety?).

Pages changing status between supplemental and non supplemental (possibly due to duplication issues).

Feel free to add to the list.

It is happy hour here and I've got some ribs a cook'in.
