Fluctuating Links from my News system

What do You think about it

I have trouble sinde June 27th

Only 3 weeks recovered in October.

Now I just thought about my news link system.

On every page, 3 links are inserted from the news system.

Every page created in the last 3 month is evaulated by age and similarity of themes.

The 3 pages with the highest score are inserted as links in the navigation:

_______________
News RSS feeds
News link 1
News link 2
News link 3
Sitemap
_______________

This links change at every new publishing of the site.

What do You think about it?

I can not evaluate it neutral, because some days programming work invested.

I understand your concern -- any time ranking trouble shows up soon after a site-wide change, you naturally get suspicious. But the 3 weeks recovery in October changes the picture a bit.

Are those links inserted into the main navigation, so that now the main nav is different on different urls?

My navigation is like this

Left column of navigation
=========================
Main themes of the site

News RSS Feeds
Random news link 1
Random news link 2
Random news link 3
Sitemap

Right column of navigation
==========================
Earlier articles written in the same year (one folder per article)
_________________________________
Pages of the current article - all in same folder
_________________________________
Later articles written in the same year (one folder per article)

The algorithm for the random news links was based on

Pages are skiped for
Being in same folder
Older than maximum for news

Each page gets assigned
Points for age, younger pages more points
Points for same theme
A random number

The top 3 placed by the point system had been assigned to the 3 random links.

Are the "new" links clearly within their own dedicated block level element? I would make sure that much was in place so that it doesn't look like you are playing "template" games.

The more discrete those links are as an element of their own, the safer they are from causing collateral damage of some kind, I think. Do they change on the same URL every time that URL is requested?

I have an own written CMS.

All the pages are generated from the database during a compile run.

All the pages are loaded up to the server at once.

Every time I change the content, I did usual a compile of the wohle site, so this links changed maybe 3 times a month.

Right now I'm not leaning toward these links as the source of your trouble -- but of course it's hard when we are speaking in relative generalities to be sure.

How long before June 27 did these random links go live? Also, was there any change you made during the 3 weeks in October where you recovered?

Finally, what kind of trouble is it that began June 27? Lower rankings for most of your keywords? Loss of only some important rankings? URLs now showing as supplemental? No obvious ranking change but traffic still went down significantly?

Are you talking about this same site:

Main site since 1997

Themed sub domains since 2002
Most themed sub domains created 2004

All very stable in all search engines.

But today, practicall all lost

site:example.com okay
site:themed-subdomain.example.com okay
PR okay
only search postions lost

For luck, my CMS has also a log file for all changes done

Seems I designed the random link system to new edited pages May 5th 2006

A first reduction in traffic was June 8th 2006,
but since all top positions had been okay, I thought this is because of the soccer world championship and a change to good weather conditions.

June 27th, PR stable, but 85% less traffic from Google.
Some few subdomains not influenced

Juli 26th a little improvement, www good findable in Google

August 17th all subdomains all subdomains and www very low Google traffic

September 30th All Google top positions like before

Oktober 22th very strange, all usual search results good, but much less traffic from Google. I tried to check my search psotions with parts of my referer log file, one week ago, I could not find a single query where I lost positions. My resarch went so far, that I tried to find DNS system manipulations

November 2th: most Google traffic lost on all subdomains and WWW.

Maybe to mention that I was on vacation last August week until September 11th 2006, in this time no changes on the sites.

I redesigned October 10th all pages.
On most pages is now below the content

############# #######
# 336x280 __# # NAV #
############# #######

The additional NAV block is filled with some usefull links by a javascript

Add to google (Google RSS feed)
Add to favorites
Print whole chapter
Highres pictures (if picture with high res on the page)
Contact (to contact form of page)
<< < > >> (copy by javascript navigation buttons from top of page)

December 6th, my random link system went into suspicion to be a potential trouble maker. I removed them and now there are instead
links to the high resolution version of the pictures shown on the pages.

It was until now also possible to view pictures on the page also in high resolution, but the function was until December 6th inserted by a javascript and so not indexed by Google.

Until now, search.live.com has spidered most high res pictures, but no visit from Googlebot for the hih res pictures.

To be more precise: 2 subdomains had not the news system, because they had no news.

www. was my main site from 1997, nearly no new contence, new contence only for the theme oriented sub domains

bock. is the web site about my book from 1992. Since the book remains unchanged, natural also no news system.

Both of this subdomains are also effected, regardless they do not had this links from the news system.
