Can "Domain for Sale" Hurt Existing Web Page Ranking?

As of last week my web site was within in the top 10 google search results when searched by common real estate search term. (Don't mean to cryptic, but I'm new and noticed that I'm allowed to post urls or keywords.)

Since I no longer need this web site I put it up for sale on godaddy's domain aftermarket and notified a few Realtors that it was available. (I had been contacted in the past by some Realtors inquiry if it was for sale.)

In addition, I left all the existing content in place, except added that the domain name was now for sale.

This week when I searched it by the same common search terms - it's nowhere to be found. Also, I noticed another web site which had the exact same name as mine, except ended in .net also disappeared.

Could adding that the "Domain name only is for sale - Property sold" have drastically changed the google search results? Visually it seems the entire search results changed around.

When I spoke with the godaddy cs about selling it they said definitely put in the description that its within the 10 top search results. Now, it's gone and I can only pull it by entering the exact url name in the navigation bar.

Any advice appreciated!

BTW...The site was 5 years old and that's why I thought it had a great google ranking.

can you find the site if you search for your www.example.com in google?

if not you've been kicked probably.

"Domain for Sale"? I don't see Google penalizing a site for that, if the content is otherwise unchanged.

Listing a domain for sale with a main selling point being that it ranks high in Google? I can definitely imagine Google penalizing a site for that, if it came to their attention. They don't want people buying and selling their intellectual property (e.g. Pagerank) and don't want people participating in schemes to get an artificially high ranking.

I'd like to suggest using a banner for it instead of text....SE's can't read a banner (.....well....not yet anyway)

however I don't think that small snippet of text is resposible for your current dilema
