Would blog archive pages yield duplicate content errors?

Here's a thought I just had.

If you have a site with content on the home page, and content on the permalink URL and the same content ALSO on an archive page
(such as /2006-11 for example) then would this yield a duplicate content penalty?

One could argue that having the archive is important so that the content doesn't roll off your front page and you still maintain a click depth of two......

What's better? Having google see that the click depth is two or removing/blocking the content so you get less of a duplicate content penalty?
