.eu domains - any benefit in regional European Googles?

I am aware that if you want to feature in Google regional indexes you need to be hosted in the country concerned. I have read that you may be able to avoid this with a county-specific domain that points to the main one.

This is a bit far-fetched, but does anyone know if a .eu domain will help in regional European Googles?

They are probably a bit too "fresh" to allow any conclusions to be drawn yet.

It certainly does not hinder. I can get as good ranking with new .eu domains as with new .com domains.

As it happens, my next project is an informational .eu site that will be published in at least 7 languages... I'll let you all have a few key snippets from time to time. Domain was registered a few weeks ago, and a basic site will not be going live for at least several more weeks.
