OK - I've just changed my domain registrant and for some reason my website is down.

Upon phoning, I was told the problem was rectified and the dns records now point back to my host and the site will be down for 24-48 hours.

I know of at least a few sites this has happened to and over a prolongued time the domain registers temporary page is indexed by Google. But what of the short term?

What happens if Google visits today? Will it come back in a few days and check / confirm or will it just index and to hell with my ranking!

Google bots keep visiting the site pages for a long period than you can imagine. Not only it's ok if your site was down for a few days, even if you removed your site totally and google bots got 404 errors they will still keep harvesting these pages later hoping to find them.

Down for a few hours - no noticable problems.

Down for a few days - nothing long-term significant.

Down for a few weeks - may take quite a while to regain positions.

I believe a few hours is fine.

My site went down intermittently for a few weeks, the server kept crashing and I did notice a drop in my pages indexed and a drop in my positions, I hope its only temp!

very very similar thing happened to me. Site was down for almost 48 hours, and everything was fine with Google after it came back up.
