Is there a Google page re-design penalty?

Hi

We have a page on our site that is optmised and performing well in google for a generic keyphrase. Can anyone tell me, if we completely redeisgn the page but keep the meta data and titles, text etc optimised is it likely will we drop out of the rankings albeit temporarily or should we keep our ranking?

We have done this several times as eventually an old site design, looks just that; old. We kept the content, title, text links, and link navigation the same as before and did not have any problem. In fact, improving your site always seems to help somehow.
