The new Google Blog News Alerts sucks and shows just how screwed up their index is.

My wife runs a local community site that's been in Google News for sometime. To stay up on who’s talking about our area she has Google News Alerts setup using a variety of keywords (her domain, the community name, etc.). The alerts have been in place for over a year and yesterday she started getting notifications that included blogs that are now part of Google News - [googleblog.blogspot.com...] .

These MFA scrapper sites (mostly WP & Blogger ) have her content included in the Blog Alerts which shows that Google cannot identify the original source of a document. I guess all the worry about dup penalties/filters, unique content and quality sites is a waste of time. The real question is why go to the trouble and expense of writing something original when you can just steal it from someone?. . You would think that Google had the brains to hand pick or somehow review the blogs that are included in the Alerts but I guess not.

Seriously, what’s a small webmaster to do? It’s not worth it to run down this many sites using DMCA threats - It would be a full-time job with no hope of ever stopping it. She’s not going to opt-out of Google News because of the cachet and the distribution she gets.

My worry is that there’s a “mother of all duplicate content penalties” on the horizon and short of blocking everything she has no choice other than being a victim.

Is it time to join the IncrediBill Club for Curmudgeons?
