How do these affect and relate to each other?

Google seems to becoming more and more complex as to the way it works. Unless you have a Batchelor in Google Science your site won't work properly. Which cuts out 95% of sites. These four items seem to relate to each other and have a major bearing on how your site shows up in the serps. Can anyone with a Degree in Google explain it in laymans terms?
It would be very much appreciated.

Well, that's a pretty tall order for one thread -- and yes, Google is certainly becoming very complex. But I will start with some good reference threads:

1. Supplemental Results: What exactly are they? [webmasterworld.com]

2. Filters exist - the Sandbox doesn't. How to build Trust. [webmasterworld.com]

3. Google PR - PageRank FAQs [webmasterworld.com]

4. Links -- I think you'll find information about links mixed into all the above threads.
