Pop-ups and natural search

Do pop-ups impact natural search rankings?

We all know that pop-ups are not permitted on adwords landing pages, but what is the general opinion regards the use of pop-ups on pages accessed from Google natural listings? Does any one think they may have a negative impact on rankings for natural search?

If they have no useful info - and most do not - then they should not exist.

If they DO have useful content, then the site may suffer, as the link to the pop-up may be javascript or otherwise ignored by Google, and links from the pop-up may not get spidered.

Straight ad pop-ups probably don't impact on the serps at all, they just get squashed by blockers, or incentivize people never to visit again.

Unless your target audience is total saddoes, then there's almost certainly a better way to monetize your site. Saddoes rarely convert, they just go "Oooh a pop-up. Isn't it amazing what they can do"

Yes it impacts your ranking, but probably not the way that you think.

A good part of your ranking depends on getting reputable links. Most reputable sites are lothe to link to sites with popups. You do the math.

I wish!

Remove your blocker for five minutes and see - but be sure you have a resuscitation team lined up, else you'll drown!

But I'm sure most folk these days do use a blocker.

Is there a pop-up fan out there who reckons they profit by using them - once they've taken the downside into account?

I use pop-UNDERS in limited numbers to supplement my income on one site. It has no impact on traffic if your content is worthwhile and you control the number of annoyances. And these pop-UNDERS from established ad agencies beat at least the google and IE blockers. Last I checked, even IMDB was spewing pop-ups occasionally. If people start leaving due to a few pop-UNDERS, then your site s**ks anyway.
