How Long After Attaining Links Will Results Show in Google?

Hi Guys,

I just got a little question about link development and Google. Say my site is on 50th page on term “bla bla bla” and I get some really good height quality links. When can I expect to see change in my site's ranking?

A) After PR/Back link export?
B) When all the links are crawled (so right of way).
C) After certain amount of time 1 month, two months etc.

Assuming I got enough links to beat the competitor and all on-site optimization is done.

Thanks in advance.

You definitely don't need to wait until the next PR/backlink export for the effect to be felt. That's only when Google puts information out for public display, but they are continually updating this kind of information behind the scenes on a regular, even daily, basis -- pretty soon after it is grabbed and put into the shared crawling cache.

That said, sometimes the effect of new links seems to phase in gradually, as if they are dampened a bit at first until their "pedigree" gets checked out.

Thanks for the replay Tedster. That is kind of what I thought but here is what I don't understand:

I have a website <in a certain market> and I'm trying to target for <a 3-word search term>. Currently I'm on page 37 of Google for this term. My site has been there for almost six months now. At first I only had 12 inbound links after this PR export Google shows 104 inbound links. But I know I have got lot more links than this. I checked few sites above me; they only have like 9 -17 inbound links. Even in Yahoo my links are higher.

Now recently I added <new content> to my site called <4-word phrase>; few days after I started to get hits from Google. I was on the third page for term <4-word phrase PLUS generic terms>. After two days I checked again and I was on the second page for this term and I noticed that someone has linked to me with the exact keyword in anchor. I know this term is not very competitive.

That said, sometimes the effect of new links seems to phase in gradually, as if they are dampened a bit at first until their "pedigree" gets checked out.

Is it possible that it depends on phrase? Like how competitive is it? How many people has their sites optimized for this term? Because in my case, the results were immediate for lest competitive term. And they are taking longer for competitive term.

Thanks again for your help. I appreciate it.

<Sorry, no specific search terms.

Certainly -- and it doesn't take an extra "competitive rating" in the algorithm to make that happen. It's just a natural effect of the complete Google algorithm. Even if one site has an exact phrase match, a more solidly established url can still outrank it with just some of the keywords on the page and in anchor text.

Does anyone have a feel for how long this dampening effect or lag typically lasts?

In other words, where members have noticed a delay before new links have a beneficial impact on their site's position in the SERPs, how long was the lag between the time the new links were probably found by Google, and the benefit in the SERPs started to emerge? How much longer before the entire beneficial impact took full effect?
