Google's recently-registered domain, searchmash.com is live. Apparently, it's using google's data.

Google have already been experimenting with adding pictures to the SERPs, but you'll see a lot more in searchmash.

I wonder if this could be the forerunner of a new froogle/base interface?

SearchMash lets you search the internet in new ways. It is constantly evolving as we come up with ideas and figure out what works and what doesn't. Well, I gave them feedback on their features page. I only found one feature useful (the menu on the URL).

This is pretty ho-hum.

The image feature is pretty useless, IMO. Did a search on "adwords API". Got a picture of a keyboard (used as a masthead on a blog). The other two images shown no longer existed on the websites.

Having the image results on the right, looks just like A9.com I like this but it does cause the page to load slower which can be annoying if you use a lot of dodgy web connections like I have over the last few years.

Let me restate that. It looks a lot like A9.com did when it first came out with the images to one side and the use of the Google Index. Now A9 looks a lot different than I remember, it seems like it is trying to sell me books more than ever. Maybe I'm not logined or haven't customized things correctly.

Kinda nice that none of my pages are listed as supplemental unlike google. However, searchmash also has none of the images from those pages either. Still adds up to google with a facelift and some new doodad stuff. whoopee.

Hmm. The ability for users to move search results around? Anybody see a future where Google uses the advice of millions of users to sort the results as they think they should, and that these results define how the default results show? Rather than the advice of website owners and links?

They already have that available if that's what they wanted. Millions of people already have the google toolbar installed, it wouldn't be that hard to track user habits. But jtara probably has it right.

Besides, who would bother to move the results around (except for a few bored webmasters). On what basis, because they like the URL? How would you even know what's relevent if you haven't visited the site? Looks like another complete waste of time and resources to me. In the meantime, they can't even get their own search engine to work right.

Sure looks and sounds to me like a "live test environment" aka "rapid prototyping"... What better way to figure cool stuff out and not worry about the "brand". Or maybe they actually realize who better to compete with themselves than themselves. Why wait for the competition to innovate and fragment the market? Why not pre-empt?

I like the dropdown menu on the URL..but that's about it. Would be a nice touch if users could change the colour scheme..getting tired of the ol' blue-green links.

All I know is when I type in our site name our site logo pops up in the images on the right, but instead of linking to us it links to some foreign affiliate program that doesn't even have our site logo or a link to us on their page. Very strange :)
