My site content is mostly charts

Google can't see charts, how do I deal with this?

I make charts/graphs/diagrams on various topics. I have begun building a collection of pages that feature these and will be doing a lot more. Google ignores the charts (of course) and looks only at the text. The text is really extraneous as the charts stand on their own. Currently I add a few brief paragraphs of explanatory text just to give Google something to work with.

My next project will create hundreds of new charts, one per page, each for a specific subtopic. I can write some boilerplate text that will go on all the pages, but I can only do the simplest variations for individual pages, a few words at most. Any advice on how to optimize the pages in a Google-friendly way?

Think about your visitors.

I find it hard to believe that raw charts, with no explanation, will attract many people; charts need an explanation of what's charted, and to be interesting, they probably need some interpretation of the significance of what is shown.

If your visitors need none of that - then they probably don't need the charts!
