GBot visits - WMT says one thing, my stats say something very different

The Googlebot comes by my sites at least once per week, often more than once. I just checked both my cPanel stats for one of the sites, and the Google data at Webmaster tools for that same site, and there appears to me to be a discrepancy, which I cannot understand.

Google says the last visit to the home page was well over a month ago; AWStats shows them coming by every week (and as recently as 3 days ago).

I realize that they may not hit the index.html page each and every time, but given that the bot has been to this site at least 8 to 10 times over the past 6 weeks, it seems unlikely that it has never hit the home page. BTW, this is a relatively small site (under 30 pages total).

==================

From my site's cPanel -- AWStats
(bot name; hits; bandwidth; last visit)

Googlebot .... 135+17 .... 2.47 MB .... 26 Sep 2006 - 23:48

(Numbers after "+" are successful hits on "robots.txt" files)

------------------

From Google's "Webmaster Tools", sitemap.xml

"Googlebot last successfully accessed your home page on Aug 12, 2006"

==================

That is a 45 day discrepancy... Is there an explanation for the two different dates?

There are many fake Googlebots run by spammers and scrapers. Do a reverse DNS lookup on the IPs to see who owns them.
