Is it ok if there is no index file in a sub directory?

I have a site which i created few years back which has a directory structure like this.

/products.htm contains links to /prod/file1.htm, /prod/file2.htm.. etc

But there is no /prod/index.htm file.

From my other pages i link to /products.htm (there is no reference to /prod/)

This site is doing well in google but not in yahoo and msn. is it because of this?

I would expect to see the section index for that section named as the index file in that folder, but if you are careful with internal linking what you have done should not be a problem.

Thanks for the reply g1smd. Yes that is true but it helps me in Google.

I have a file called /windows.htm for my windows productxyz. All windows product files under /win/ directory and I am no.1 in Google for "windows productxyz".

But I am nowhere in Yahoo and Msn for "windows productxyz".

Now I made a redirect from /win/index.htm to /windows.htm.

As long as it is a 301 redirect, that will be fine.

A 302 redirect will cause you big problems, as will a meta refresh, or anything involving javascript to force the new URL.
