Refining the link: query to exclude specific domains

Can anyone shed light onto the problem of excluding sites from the link: query.

Logically, one would think

link:www.widget.com -site:www.blue-widget.com -site:www.green-widget.com

would work. It does on MSN, Altavista (and not on Yahoo).

We have a number of sites that lnik between each other (owned by the same company .. white hat stuff!) but I would like to know the real number of inbound links excluding those from our own set of sites.
