What is the processing cycle that Google uses

Have posted this wrapped around another rambling text - so here's a condensed version.

Does Google have a (batch) processing cycle - eg once per month, once per week, once per day, once per hour : depending on the popularity ranking, PR or whatever? What is the processing cycle - what are the rules? How often do updates happen (decpending on PR importance etc)? What is the probability that material gets collected, cached and categorised - and how often?

I seem to see a lot of voodoo-hoodoo about what should be a straightforward and rational process. I can understand that Google want to protect their proprietary ranking decision process (so that others don't subvert their process) - but the rules of engagement should be clear so all honest players have a fair chance of understanding and have clear direction what they should be doing to improve the search experience for all.

:-))))

Way back when it was pretty much once a month cycle. (see http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2657.htm [webmasterworld.com]). But for quite a while now there is no such predictability. The data-sets in play are too large, and the size of their server farm makes some kind of regular schedule unworkable.

So changes happen on a small scale daily, and even more frequently than that in some cases. Large scale changes happen when they feel they are ready to roll out something new. That's what we live with.

Further question :
Accepting that the universe is large and G cannot keep to a predetermined update schedule etc, why are MSN and Yahoo better at adding new pages to their own search results tha Google? Are they faster and better, have better algorithms, better people, better systems etc? Are they not using a batch processing system that G seem to be operating?
