Google Index

How can i get some of my pages out of the index

Hi all,

Would greatly appreciate some help with this one guys.........

I have a lot of pages in my site that have become obsolete and are not being used however they are still in Google's Index and I want to be able to remove them.

The pages have already been deleted from our content management system so I cannot understand why they remain in the index.

I'm very new to Web design and SEO so apologies if this is a naive "newbie" type question.
