Backlinks - significant drop on Aug 9

Last Wednesday we suffered a huge loss in backlinks from 2000+ links in Google to about 300 with a significant effect on Page Rankings.

Have others been affected too?

Is there anything we can do - apart from getting more backlinks?

Are we panicking too soon?

Any advice welcome!

That many links? Were they quality and relevant links or ones from spammy sites? Is your webtraffic the same or did it drop as well?

I never thought the Google "link:sitename" command gave any predictable or sensible results that you can analyze anyway!
