August 1 - Pages Dropped from Google

We had a large percentage of our pages (approx 20,000 of 35,000 pages) dropped from Google's index sometime around Aug. 1

I can find no code changes that we made around that time that may have caused this. The pages were previously indexed, the URLs have not changed, and our sitemap and Google Sitemap file structures have not changed.

Has anyone else seen this same effect? Does anyone know why this may have happened. I have seen many comments around Google dropping pages a few months ago but nothing recently.
