My site, released at the tail end of last year has been clambering steadily up the rankings and is now number 1 in MSN and Yahoo for my main search phrase, but is absolutely nowhere to be seen in Google. Like not even in the top 20 pages. The PR is high, the links are good quality and the content top notch. 8 months in a sandbox?

Grrr!

8 months in a sandbox?

Not unusual at all.

Has googlebot been spidering your site?
Did you submit a sitemap?
Have you checked your site on Google's Webmaster Central?

Try 16 months and counting...I've given up on a few of my sites! Just when I thought 2 of my sites were getting out, the whole Big Daddy fiasco happened and now they are buried deeper than ever before.

Yeah, I spent about 16 months in the sandbox too. To this day I still get more referrals from Y! than G - although both continue to improve.

I do believe they would fix this “phenomena” if they could.

the sandbox is not a phenomena its an observed affect that google are happy with.

I have a list of six major search strings. All are in top 5 on Yahoo, MSN and Ask, three don't get in the top 100 in G

I haven't checked in other engines but Google annoys me when a search on widgets (plural) returns answers on widget (singular) in preference to pages with the word matching the query when I am quite specifically not looking for an instance of widget but the general topic widgets.

its an observed affect that google are happy with.

Why would they be happy with it? You gotta believe every now and then even a Googler brings up an alternative SE when looking for something that might, shall we say, be on the new side?

The only thing they are happy about is it alleviates other problems they are dealing with. I don’t believe the difficulty encountered by new sites to crack the top 1,000 for up to a year is something their proud of or event want. They’re clearly the leaders in search, but this is causing a staleness problem that’s pretty glaring. I’m sure they have their reasons, but by design?

When webmasters first started discussing the "sandbox effect" I remember that Matt Cutts was a good bit curious because Google had not explicitly set out to create such a thing with any one targeted change to their algorithm. In fact, I remember him finally saying that it was a cumulative and interactive effect of several different filters, in place for various reasons.

In recent weeks, I think something about the interaction between those various components has changed. We are hearing more reports of at least SOME new domains showing up a lot faster in the search results than we would have expected back in 2005.

Agreed with Tedster

Have some sites which quickly came out of so called SandBox effect
and some of them are over an year old and still suffering

Approach to their SEO is different as well

Agreed with tedster, we have released new sites over the past year and none of them ever hit a sandbox and rank great in the serps, but none of them really have any pagerank. We just put them on the web and have never chased backlinks to boost page rank.

I wonder is there is some sort of penalty for "chasing page rank" in that little green toolbar.

The problem with this would be if it had been achieved properly i.e. actually being a site that people want to link to. How could they possibly distinguish? It means that good sites are penalised.

its become evident that in the fight against spam a higher level of colateral has become acceptable. Speculating that certain things dont make sense because it would hit innocent sites is no longer really a valid statement.

trinorthlightning-
I am curious if the sites that are doing well with very little pr are having any supplemental problems.
I'm beginning to think interior pages with no incoming or even just few incoming links, are the reason for supplemental.

Having similar problems with one of my websites.

5 search terms, all in top 5 in all search engines including google but for past couple of weeks the google ranking has gone way down in the 50s and 100s for those terms that are still in top 5 in yahoo, msn, etc.

Anybody know WHAT is going on? Is jagger update over or is it still taking place slowly?
