how do you achieve #1 ranking in google.com for a single word keyword.

I have a website which ranks #2 or #3 for a given keyword...

How do I get it Rank #1..

Experienced people please suggest me some methods..

You need to really go through the threads here it has been written about many times.

One thing to consider as well 2nd and 3rd place may mean lower traffic but a higher conversion rate.

If I recall correctly, some studies suggested that second and third positions get more traffic then the number one.

I got #1 ranking on a new site (3 months old)for a particular keyword :-)

and i forgot to mention... the keyword in question is not a real word, its a word coined by me and it also happens to be my domain name....and no body would organically search for this keyword.

Whenever I see someone wanting to be #1 for a single keyword I suggest they search for information on the "long tail" which makes you realize how many visitors you can get through thousands of 2, 3 and longer specific phrases. It's fun to be #1 on a topic but the real traffic comes from the long tail.

Whenever I see someone mention a long tail I can tell right away that...

i always go for the NO.1 ranking for my main keyword AND the long tail as well. Massivle better to be 1 than 2, especially if you are selling listings, not products. Even with a product site, I see double traffic on the NO.1 position, than No.2

incoming anchor text on your single word, is the way to go, and making sure your anchor text onsite to your home page, is just on the single word you want to rank for.

I try with good success to get every page on my sites in the top few rankings for logical key words/phrases so I'm not saying good rankings aren't important. It's just that so often new people here only think about being #1 on a top key word without realizing the whole picture.

For example the top visited keyword for one site of mine puts my homepage at #5 but only brings in about 20% of my SE visitors. Thousands of other words/phrases bring in the rest.

If one keyword is bringing you 20 percent of your search engine traffic compared to 1,000s of keywords then see how important that keyword is?

If it's a big enough keyword and you rank high on then it's only natural that all the other 2,3 and 4 key phrases do follow.

I'm not saying good results on major keywords don't help but it takes time to get there. Newbies need to see that all is not lost if they can bring in searchers through the long tail.
