Google - truncated URL's in SERP's

Google truncating search URL's

For long URL's I've seen several instances of Google displaying the full URL in the search results. A right click on "properties" confirms the correct URL is in place. But then this is followed, when clicking on the URL from G, with a "truncated URL", which in our case, redirects to the home page.

e.g.

Google SERP's show
http://www.example.com/Widget1/Widget2/Widget3/Name-of-the-widget.htm

When clicking on the title in the SERP's G truncated part ot the URL like this:

http://www.example.com/Widget1/Widget2/Widget3/Name-of-the-wid

This pattern is not consistant. We have many instances of long URL's which work fine, but I have not yet checked if there is a character limit - even so something's not right, IMO .

How can it be that the results and properties are showing correctly, but clicking on the link reveals a truncated URL?

Can anyone report similar observations and explain what is happening?

I have seen this type of URL in my awstats reports. I don't know where they are coming from but after your post maybe from google.

Anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure it is Google doing the truncating? If not, this thread might prove enlightening:
