complain about a real problem

Can't see the sandbox being a "real" problem, or a problem at all. It's there to stop the SPAM. If I start a new company called Mesothelioma Lawyers Ltd you reckon I should show up in the top 500 purely because that's my company name?

Sure, the "sandbox", whatever it is, hurts some. It hurts people who are creating sites for free traffic. Many of them are spammers/freeloaders. It also hurts others. They - particularly anyone starting a new business with a business plan that relies on free SE traffic - are probably better off staying unemployed (or employed if they can find a job). Any new site starting off on the premise that free traffic will sustain it deserves to fail.

So, if you remove the sandbox as a reasonable cause for complaint, and remove most of the other whining, we'd reduce this thread to one page and those that can't even be bothered to read it will get a personal reply from Googleguy because he owes them.

Just in the last couple of hours, I've seen new movement in the direction of accepting new data on more IPs.

Just to throw this out -- I think the term "SEO" got hit quite hard in the new data. A couple of very high-ranking SEO sites look like they're taking a dive in the new data. They're both optimized for "SEO" even in their domain names, and they seem to be hit regardless of the keywords you use.

Maybe there is a sliding scale of mild to severe on the hitlist. If so, "SEO" must be at the severe end.

The IPs that yesterday showed a "massively inflated index" are showing the "other index" today.

The "other index", the smaller one, seems to be spreading to more IPs in just the last few hours.

Err, hang on. There is another new new "new" index at [64.233.167.104...] and this returns half the number of results seen at other IPs.

This index new has NO supplemental results and ALL of the spam I see in other searches is GONE.

This index is based on older data, and older processing, as the entries for any PDF files show the snippet as the first few dozen words from the PDF file (I noted before that in the "massively inflated index" that the snippets for results for PDF files matched the search terms you were looking for, and this was a new feature).

<edit>Bah! That was short lived. For 10 minutes or so, that IP had NO supplemental results in any of the searches where I normally see them.</edit>

The results currently at 66.102.7.104 have my MIA site.

However I am also seeing an obviously spammy site at no.1 for my main term. This has been the case every time that I have seen my site on a datacenter in the last few days.

Whatever is filtering out my site is also killing the spam.

This particular MIA site has always under-performed in Google and is a domain name that was used by someone else before me. I wonder if it was labelled as spam in some DB several years ago and somehow this data is being used now? - just a wild theory.

The index I saw about 10 minutes ago at 66.102.7.104 is, I believe, the 'final' index in the process of being built. It is one of 3 different indices I was seeing as early as Tuesday and Wednesday (not counting a 4th much smaller and very elusive index).

Usually I think people are exaggerating when they complain about the Google SERPs after an update; but I must admit, this time I came to WebmasterWorld specifically _because_ the Google results were so bad and I wondered what was up.

Ranking in the SERPS is all over the place. Up, down, gone, you name it. Changing constantly, and inconsistent between data centers.

That, I believe, is the one where ALL supplemental results are GONE. I saw that earlier for about 10 minutes.

I see two distinct results for my sites (high up in a big index; or slightly lower in a very big, huge even, index). Yesterday it was 50/50. Today the smaller index, based closely on the old index, prevails; positions have hardly changed. The "massively inflated index", with lots of new entries, and big changes of order at the top, seems to be withering away; it is only on a very few IPs now. There is a third set of results; I see it too rare to comment on those.

Fresh dates are gone on the larger index; but they were rare anyway. Even for sites being re-cached they failed to be so tagged. Fresh dates are just as prevalent as they have been (over the last few weeks) on the older index. I see lots.

What does the 0 and 1 mean?

I assume "1" is your site is #1, and that "0" is your site is not in the index. :-(

One site I monitor is #3 in 42 million results, or #7 in 64 million results depending which IP you hit. The #7 results are fading away. Most IPs have the #3 result; which is basically reverting back to what Google has been showing for the last month at www.google.com. The "massively inflated index" seen at several IPs, never seen at www.google.com, is now disappearing from all IPs.

<edit>FRESH DATES just flipped. All of the 9 Feb became 10 Feb.</edit>

Yep. My site is #3 in 42 million everywhere. The #7 in 64 million set of results is gone from all IPs. This happened almost at the same instant that Fresh Dates all advanced one day. So, after this "massive update" my SERPs are the same as they were before the update. Looking at other searches, they have hardly moved either.

66.102.7.104 is missing way too many sites to be paid attention to anymore than anything else.

I wish I would have seen the supplementals gone. That would be something to be excited about.

Unfortunately though it seems the hijacked results are taking control, with missings sites all around.

The propagation for the several widely-diverse pages I've been monitoring shows that within the last couple of hours the new Google database has reached all 55 IP addresses.

add a subdomain to an existing one, ban GB from your site that doesn't rank for for domain.com and take it from there. Can't starve cause G is full of bugs. It's not the same or near it but what else can you do?

Without relevant results visitors will turn to other search engines that provide relevant results, without visitors "Google Is Nothing" just another failed search engine that couldn't keep up the pace of providing relevant results.

I was looking for something today on google uk and after the 3rd page i gave up and found what i wanted in the 1st position in Msn. I wonder how many people are not finding what they want and then going straight to msn, i'm sure google can track how many people are leaving there site for msn.

Yup, a few of the datacenters showing "missing"/otherwise hijacked sites again.

These have the new clean dmoz or meta descriptions instead of ransom notes too, so perhaps there is reason for optimism.

What, exactly, is NEW about it? To me, it looks much the same as the results before the update. The only "new" results that I ever saw was an index with a massive rise in the number of results. That was shown on various IPs for a few days, and then gradually disappeared from all of them. I never saw that one directly at www.google.com though.

That has been happening for at least several days. You can over-ride it by clicking the "visit google.com" link.
