Microsoft on Monday said it has hired away Gary Flake [research.yahoo.com], a principal scientist at Yahoo Research Lab and former head of research at the Web portal's Overture Services division.

Yahoo 2009 personalized search? Whatever happened to semantic web technology?

"MSN Hires Top Yahoo Search Talent Gary Flake"

What talent? :)

I had a boss who constantly told me: "Ken, stop talking BS and start giving me results."

Yahoo! has spent billions of dollars to improve its search business.

March 2003 - Acquires Inktomi
September 2003 - Acquires Overture plus Altavista

Then, in February of 2004 announces "YAHOO! INTRODUCES MORE COMPREHENSIVE AND RELEVANT SEARCH EXPERIENCE WITH NEW YAHOO! SEARCH TECHNOLOGY."

The press release read "Yahoo! Inc., a leading global Internet company, today announced that it has created a more comprehensive and relevant search experience for users through the deployment of its own algorithmic search technology on Yahoo! Search."

After one year, I still can't see any good results.

Since February 2005 and without the help of Gary Flake, MSN gives much better results than Yahoo.

Failure to rank well on Yahoo is irrelevant to whether Mr. Flake is a talent, although I agree Yahoo's result is not comparable with Google's.

I assume that this has more to do with a MSN PPC offering than organic

The new MSN search still needs a bunch of help and maybe this is it.
