You should see a Product Search line where directory or news tags often appear, then product listings coming below that.
It seems to be ordered by price, I tried 40 or so searches for common products, all appeared in price order. Froogle by name....Froogle by nature.
It might definately have value for quickly finding the lowest price product by brand once the database has a reasonable number of products in it.
And yeah, I imagine Adwords advertisers are going to be a little miffed about this. I know I'm concerned, even though none of my keyphrases bring up Froogle listings (yet).

Poor timing. What ever happened to the folks who used to gush over Google and the cluetrain [webmasterworld.com]
Now with my high resolution monitor when I do a search the TRUE search results only take up 25% of the initial screen with the froogle results now at top.
At anywhere from 640x480 to 1024x768, AdWords take 33% of the screen or less for me.
I dont need books i need travel and hotels and flights.
If you're selling a hotel in India, they should let you in there. The whole point of Froogle is to sell "things", not to be an advertising service.

Why should advertisers be all that upset? It's just another kind of free listing, above the other free listings. The only problem I can see compared to Adwords is that it only displays 3 results, and there's no way to guarantee placement.
You make it sound like Google is copying Yahoo. I actually think Yahoo is becoming "Google-like". Buying their own ppc engine, focusing on "search", copying froogle with Yahoo Products. Soon you will see Overture results in the right nav at Yahoo shown just like at Google.
Anyway, Froogle is here to stay. Time to focus some effort over there :)
It is a Google endorsed set of free listings. If the theory that people use Google because they like and trust Google holds true then the upshot is that people are more likely to trust the Google endorsed listings over the Google PPC listings.
CTR is likely to drop for those where Froogle appears, and CTR correlates to profit for good advertisers.

Oh brother. If it is that simple there will be serious problems.
Think of all the schemes sites will come up with to gain the top slot. (e.g. increased shipping, conditional pricing, etc.) Premature to say, but just reading what you had to say incited me.

As much as 320px now before you get to the first result :(

don't you think that I and the other thousands of websites would have taken the trouble to be in froogle then. There system is far far far from ready why are they imposing this filter on there regular results before Foogle can handle these industries. I think there is more here than just seperating the commercial and non commercial sites this may be a test phase but why do it live? Google is planning something big for the new year unfornatunately its for no ones benifit but there own. Be very careful here Google your sites been built on reputation for great relevent and fair results, all three of those qualities are in jeopardy. The new kid is around the block, I would say right about now is a perfect time for those new kids to pull some tricks of there own.
The stress caused by all of these changes may just push a few more 'over the edge'
Amen, brother. It seems like i've been getting hit by bricks from various corners of the web since September. What was shaping up as a prospectively great christmas is slowly deteriorating into a big disappointment! (Sure froogle helps some of you, but not me) So chalk this one up as another hit. When Dec. 1 rolled around and still no froogle, I really doubted it would happen this year. I still love google, but couldnt you have held off for just 2 weeks more man, 2 weeks! :(
rise2it - So which is the best building to jump from? sticky me.
