Well, today, we were talking in the car, and when my girlfriend punched the pedal, yep, heard the sickening crunch and the yelping started. When I got out of the car Maggie was writhing on the ground. I sent my girlfriend to the house for my shotgun and told the boy to start walking to the house. Maggie tumbled down the bank and into the creek. Maggie was yelping and I was sick. No tears yet, from me anyway, but I was close. I can't stand to see any animal in pain.
By the time the shotgun arrived, Maggie had crawled up from the creek, and then started walking. She was clearly in shock, bleeding, but she wasn't dragging any legs and other than the swelling around her head, seemed okay.
So... Mags was scooped up and into the car and taken to the vet. After several pain shots, and cortisone to take her out of shock, she licked my hand. That brought a few tears. Yeah, I still cry watching "Ole Yeller".
After X-rays, (no broken bones) and some stitches, Mags has to spend the night but the vet said I could pick her up in the morning. I went out and bought her a huge doggie pillow. Funny how those critters find a way into your life. This is the same dog I cuss every day because she chases the cows...
TheVisitor - that's uncalled for. YOU NEED TO APOLOGIZE IMMEDIATELY. You have NO IDEA what any of the rest of us do for those who have problems such as hurricanes in Florida or tsunami in Asia, and YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO CAST STONES. Grow up.
LOL, for the briefest of seconds, I think she wondered the same thing. I threw my hat at the car when I got out. Not because I blamed her, but because I thought I was going to have to shoot the dog in front of her and the boy. I just wanted everyone out of there because I didn't want them to see it. The other dogs took off as soon as they heard Mags yelping. The boy was bawling. Girlfriend was bawling.
For some reason, all the dogs are in the house tonight. Except for the Great Pyrenees, he won't leave the goats...
>>>>You have NO IDEA what any of the rest of us do for those who have problems such as hurricanes in Florida or tsunami in Asia
Firstly, stop shouting, secondly, your statement is ridiculous; of course I have no idea what 'the rest of us' (anyone other than me?) do, and neither do you. However, seeing as you're so interested, I can tell you that yesterday I gave up any vacations or 'nice stuff' for 2005 by giving 25% of my annual salary to an Asian disaster fund. I don't wear my 'giving' on my sleeve, but I'm not having you imply that I don't do anything about these things.
Apologies (to DG) once again.

Every one reacts to the loss of a loved one diffrently, while I am deeply moved by the loss of human life in the recent events in in S East Asia, losing a loved one close to home is incomparable.
So do you think the dog will do this again? Bet the cats in the neighbourhood are having a good laugh!
Visitor, sorry to hear about your loss. Our prayers are with you and the families of all the people that have lost loved ones.
Don't know if she'll stop chasing cars, she's still not up to chasing the cows yet, though she does bark at them a bit from her window throne. She still looks a bit like she came away the loser from a very bad dogfight. Fits right in with her sister, Mollie, who did come away from a very bad dogfight about a week ago.
There are more drugs in my house for animals than there are for humans...
>>why cant they judge the distance between cars?
They aren't used to animals that run 60 or 70 miles per hour.
Don't know if she'll stop chasing cars
We had a daschund when I was a kid, and the poor thing finally met his demise under the wheels of an automobile. However, he suffered thru two prior accidents, and casts, before that. Once was with a slow moving Ice Cream truck. The point is, that particular dog could not be broken of the habit.
I just filled up a 7-day pillbox for one of my dogs. It was getting tedious remembering each pill. One thyroid pill in the morning, 1/4 prednisone, then a thyroid pill in the evening, 1/4 prednisone, 1/2 urocit and a benadryl. Plus, once every week or two, an allergy shot. Oh, and eye meds in the morning and evening. But, but, but, she was such a bargain from the shelter. ;)
I'm glad Maggie is feeling better. And tell Mollie to stay out of fights, it's upsetting to her owners. Our big dogs hadn't had a fight in over a year, then we had them stay at the kennel for a few days...and they fought over new food. At first it looked like the German Shepherd lost, but the Anatolian had a big gash across the bridge of his nose. I think it was a draw. Actually, I lost because I had to pay extra for medical treatment while they were there.
Visitor, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I understand your initial reaction, but IMHO, most people who shed a tear for a mere animal have a vast reservoir of campassion for humanity.
Both DG's story and this one [msnbc.msn.com] put a lump in my throat.
