Well, today, we were talking in the car, and when my girlfriend punched the pedal, yep, heard the sickening crunch and the yelping started. When I got out of the car Maggie was writhing on the ground. I sent my girlfriend to the house for my shotgun and told the boy to start walking to the house. Maggie tumbled down the bank and into the creek. Maggie was yelping and I was sick. No tears yet, from me anyway, but I was close. I can't stand to see any animal in pain.
By the time the shotgun arrived, Maggie had crawled up from the creek, and then started walking. She was clearly in shock, bleeding, but she wasn't dragging any legs and other than the swelling around her head, seemed okay.
So... Mags was scooped up and into the car and taken to the vet. After several pain shots, and cortisone to take her out of shock, she licked my hand. That brought a few tears. Yeah, I still cry watching "Ole Yeller".
After X-rays, (no broken bones) and some stitches, Mags has to spend the night but the vet said I could pick her up in the morning. I went out and bought her a huge doggie pillow. Funny how those critters find a way into your life. This is the same dog I cuss every day because she chases the cows...
