Where would you retire? Costa Rica, Belize, NZ, Hawaii ...?

provided you have the resources...I'm just dreaming

you know... the normal drill: beach nearby, something else to do..like hiking, cheap, nightlife somewhere near, internet connection, electricity, personal and property safety, political stability and so on.

Essentially you want to be able to have almost everything that you have here. Hawaii would be perfect but it's way too expensive...NZ seems too far incase one decides to invite friends, come back to the US once a month or so.

where would you go? Who knows, maybe in 5 years I'll come back here, read this and pack my bags :).

Right now I have to worry about paying for my school...;)

That's fair. I'm not the same type either so I should've explained better: Have the ability to retire or not work if you don't want to. You have x amount of money and the way you're spending it, it will be enough so anything you make is extra.

Sounds strange but if I had the money Id retire to the centre of Cambridge amongst the Colleges.

I lived there once as a student, to have neighbours such as St Johns and Trinity College was amazing. To see Kings college with a slight covering of frost in early winter was truly breath taking.

Oh I love that place.

I don't know where I would retire, its way too early for me to think of that.

But I live in Costa Rica, and must say it's the cats pajamas. I'm part american and part costarican, and here in CR, you can find pretty much everything you have in the states.

Still trying to figure thjat one out, but I think...
Belize AND Costa Rica AND NZ AND Hawaii.

If I had the resources, I'd just move with the seasons. Works for birds.

Why follow the system like sheep and wait for a date 50/55/60 etc
Do it now!Revenue steam from the net means you are not necessarily obliged to stay where you are now.
Get out and enjoy all these things((your dreams!)while you are still young enough to really appreciate it.

I've been to Belize, Costa Rice and Hawaii. I like Belize the best! I'm only 19 though so I've got quite a ways to go.

why? I've never been to any of them...just read and seen pics about them. Costa Rica seems nicer in paper ;). I like some mountain, river and jungle in the mix...

Hawaii is too crowded/expensive, although it is farily easy to get to.

Costa Rica has wonderful jungles & rivers.

Belize has wonderful jungles, rivers, is slightly closer to the US than Costa Rica, and it has wonderful islands and cayes. The official language is english.

I went to Belize in 1999 and I'm going again in early 2005. I can't wait! Going to stay again on an approx. 13 acre island for a few days.

Absolutely NONE of the above. Don't like heat.... period. I'd be perfectly happy if the sun NEVER shone. I love rain, snow, cloudy days.... Perfect weather: 65 and raining, 35 and snowing (as it is tonight.... - and those are fahrenheit, btw....)

I'll take a small island in the San Juans thanks. (Of course, where I AM retired isn't bad, leaving out that it's in Utah of all gosh-awful states. Except for about a month in the summer, the weather's not bad.... but do NOT get me started on the "rest" of the "ambience" or lack thereof. And no - it wasn't MY choice to move here *sigh*. Just one of the compromises that go with a VERY long-term marriage....)

You would hate NZ. We have to keep this country to ourselves. Why would you want to go to the US from here? I just go and visit another vineyard and forget the world. Seriously though either you get a job here or bring LOTS of money.,

Not expensive, but you need money or a job to be allowed to stay.

More about NZ. In my part with only a little effort you could go deep sea fishing, trout or salmon fishing, hunting for pigs or deer, and visit a vineyard, all in the same day. (You might have to get up early). In winter we can add skiing to that list.

I "retired" at 42 from Canada and moved to an Island off the north shore of Venezuela where there are no hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes or other nasty natural disasters and the temperature ranges between 75ºF and 86ºF all year round.

We have been here 17 years and, while this sounds idealic, there are always other problems when you move to 'paradise'.

The culture is inevetibly totaly different from what you are used to and it is not likely you will ever adjust completely. It's not that it's bad just totally different. Things that you accept as normal in your own country are treated with abandon in another.

We receive dozens of inquiries every week from North Americans and Europeans including the UK for information on living here. Our standard answer is to rent for at least 6 months before comitting to an investment. This way you will know for sure whether you can adjust to that particular country and culture or not.

In the time we have lived here many have come and gone. It is usually much easier to buy properties or businesses than to sell them.

Because of political considerations many foreigners are now trying to divest themselves of properties here and many have waited years to recover part of their investment.

For anyone considering a move like this it can be fantastic and provide a new lifestyle away from the rat race that you are now in however just take a deep breath before putting down your money.

"to rent for at least 6 months before comitting to an investment. This way you will know for sure whether you can adjust to that particular country and culture or not."

that's the best advice one can actually give. Some things you either live with or you can't. If you buy the house and then you get bored 3 weeks later you're screwed...

walkman and roscoepico: He's 15 years older than I am, and my parente and grandparents were all over 100 when they died. His were only in their mid-70s to early-80s. Statistically, I'll outlive him by 30 years or so....

I think after the holidays, there are alot of people with this same thought.

If I were to retire, it would be where I grew up in North Idaho/Western Montana. It's peaceful, there are truly four seasons, plenty of golf, lakes, rivers, ski resorts, etc.

My goal is to be at a point where I could retire/do what I want for a living by the time I'm 30...only have 6 more years before I get there...but I am getting there.

Cozumel, Mexico. Spent my honeymoon there, would return in a heartbeat. I'd spend half my days with a scuba tank on my back, and the other half drinking mamacitas on the beach.
