I almost feel silly posting this, but I'm having trouble connecting with two different sites I routinely connect with, using two completely different internet connections. From San Francisco Bay Area. Browser cached refreshed and all that...

Anyone else having problems? I continue to connect with WebmasterWorld and much of the rest of the Web just fine.

Hey Robert Charlton, I thought it was just me. I too am having trouble browsing to a whole network of sites. Are we talking PacBell here?

Don't feel silly Robert - I think this is a real problem at the moment :(.

I'm getting inconsistent results from servers mostly located in the US. Could be some temporary dramas with the major datacenters.

Try http*//www.internettrafficreport.com/ .

<added>Just went to Internet Traffic Report myself and the site won't render. Maybe a backbone problem somewhere?</added>

www.internetpulse.net/

It looks like there is a backbone problem somewhere. Look at the above chart and then click on the severe and critical numbers (yellow and red respectively).

I got a message from my hosting company and it's probably relevant:

"There is a major fiber cut that has taken place in Palo Alto, California. This is affecting peering and routing. There is no estimated time of repair at this time...."

Looks like a big problem area is in the desert South West and beyond.

Ok. Me too. San Francisco.

The internet is supposed to be like the human brain, where everything routes, and re-routes damaged structure, without willful intervention.

Gee martinibuster,

You certainly didn't have a problem posting that last message, did you? ;)

The internet is supposed to be like the human brain

Well, actually, the human brain is one of the things I was beginning to worry about... On one of the sites, I'd recently put up a custom 404 page, new robots.txt, and I'd updated .htaccess; and I was beginning to imagine I might have misconfigured something to cause Googlebot to make endless requests for the robots.txt, filling up the log file and crashing the whole server. More than a momentary thought. ;)

Thanks... It may sound selfish to say, but I'm glad I'm not alone.

LOL. WW was the second place I visited after news.google.com, as soon as I realized something is really wrong :)

This place really rocks.

Of the above-mentioned traffic and net operations sites, the only one I could access was noc... This is the message I'm seeing:

Performance Level of the Network
There is currently a worm attacking the Microsoft SQL server causing bandwidth saturation throughout all ISPs.

>>Can't wait to read the news tomorrow.<<

Yeah, neither can I....

I can't get to almost any site hosted in the UK. I've never in 10 years of surfing seen it this bad.

Aside from the smooth functioning of the Web and the communications infrastructure of the world, and the economy and all that... this could have major implications for the next Google update:

[webmasterworld.com...]

Brett's post re the Google update... msg #49:

They are out crawling hard today - this may be the crawl. There were several last year that were 'pre update' crawls and no post-update crawl.

>>this could have major implications for the next Google update:

It looks like they have redirected almost everything to other datacenters (Non California one's), this is probably due to all the problems we are seeing in the California area.

A fiber optic cut? Ohhhh, man. That is super expensive to dig and fix. Heads will roll on this one.

My knowledge of US geography is pretty slim, but if Fremont is as close to Palo Alto as I think it is, then my good opinion of HE.net has gone up even more - no outages, no downtime.
