Here it is [siternetusa.com]

What is it exactly?
What was it first developed for?

Good luck.

since you said when it was developed then we can only say what it is : maybe it is devicethat test radioactivity in "rooms" or houses.

Lol.....

So, since there is no apparent readout this must detect just the presence of something sound related¿

Asleep. Of working for the aforementioned undisclosed government agency and under an oat of silence :)

the thing is it saves money.hmm....by doing what? telling you that neighbourhood is too loud so you should not buy the house?

>So, since there is no apparent readout

I cannot tell from the picture, but my guess is that it has some kind of readout.

Well... if it's really used even remotely as displayed you put is straight against a surface. Then it detects something, I am guessing the same way that the metallurgy engineers test the joints of a solder point, with ultrasound maybe.

>the thing is it saves money.hmm....by doing what?

It helps find a certain "event" that when it happens can cost money, especially the accumulation of these "events", so if you can stop the "events", you'll save money.

Duckula,

>you put is straight against a surface

It is the opposite of that.

But your guess had a major clue in it.

Hey, the thing is the most generic gizmo from the invention of the black box. Wait a minute, it is even a black box!

Let's say that you put it sideways against a building's structural element, and the cone pounces on it, then the echoes tell you if that point has stress damage or if is under extreme load.

<edit: redundant>

It is not placed against anything, one of the great things about it, is that it can be operated at a distance.

defanjos is the boss on this one but I would say tbear had it, I read quickly through that page and it had the answers right at the top.

up to defanjos though.

I was close for a while but not close enough. ;)

"detector"! I was off searching for "sensor" "collector" "handheld" "gun" and a bunch of other things... but never once thought to use the word "detector"...

JonB wins - congrats.

Tbear, both questions have to be answered. You did get the url with the answers in it, but that is not what I asked, sorry.

I have to give it to Jonb because he was the first one to do it.

:(

I'm sure I've seen others present their winning answer that way, it's quicker than writing it all in

tbear,
I really feel bad, when I saw your post, I was hoping you would add another post with the answers.

We have been throught this too many times, I should have added to my original post, that just the URL wouldn't be enough to win.

JonB

8:54 pm on Nov 23, 2002 (gmt 0)

now i feel bad.hm..

if this is true and it is enough that you cna jsut give URL then tbear can win i guess. he was quicker. but then we need to refine the rules - what is allowed and what not. i rememebr pointing several links with pics of stardust but it was not enought although it was exaclty the same pic - had to search for ANSWER and post it - alsmot lost it to one of member i think.

hm,if anyone thinks tbearshould win please say so - it is not in my intention to "win at all costs". i jsut followed the rules.

Oh well, at least I found it if I didn't win.
Well done JonB, as you pointed out earlier on in the quiz >well, you learn something new everyday
LOL
At least I have a good excuse to go get a beer or two now and I won't miss drinking time next week.
Hey, I feel like I won.......:)
