Yeah, I know, wierd time for the Gizmo Quiz. Sorry it is so late.

So what does this gizmo [banbots.com] do?

Hint, it's very small. :)

A nano light bulb to transmit digital signals through a fiber optical cable.

So very close.

And yes, grandpa, a quantum dot is a component of this device.

[trnmag.com...]

Single-photon light source that uses a microscopic cone to direct the photons.

"The device consists of a single quantum dot embedded in a semiconductor wafer with a semiconductor cone mounted vertically above the quantum dot. The hollow cone, or vertical cavity, is about one and a half microns tall, and 150 nanometers in diameter at the bottom and 500 nanometers at the top."

Found a reference on the TRN site, but not the page with the specific name. That was fun. Good gizmo.

Cool Gizmo. Now I wonder how many of these things it takes to replace a regular light bulb.

I can host next week on Monday. Don't know the time yet but I'll post the exact time a few hours in advance.

Thanks grandpa, I was checking out that site you were researching and I knew you would come very close to guessing the answer.

I'm really into alternative energy sources and quantum dots are going to revolutionize lighting in the near future. They are capable of producing a whiter light than conventional LEDs.

Of course quantum dots have may other uses, many of which haven't been thought of yet.

Thanks, TJ. I've missed a bunch of quizzes by coming after the fact, that and I've been working too hard. :(
