Was it only me with a strange Thursday?

Unusually low clicks...

A rock solid site, some would say boringly predictable, until yesterday when clicks nearly dropped to weekend levels, that is a 20% reduction on a weekday, which obviously means CTR and eCPM were immediately reduced and easily the lowest in nigh on two months.

EPC as normal
Page impressions normal
Traffic logs normal

Was this just a one-off day for me or did anyone else see such a day?

Please, no postings saying "don't judge by one day alone" etc. since I need to comprehend whether any new ad targeting etc. is affecting my sites.

My ctr for thursday is exactly the same as wednesday and tuesday.

Today is showing similar ctr too, although it looks like ecpm is edging upwards again (over past 2-3 days) after a fall last thursday :)

OptiRex,
I had an unusual day too (same figures as yours)
and rock solid predictable stats. (not that boring though ;-)

This morning I decided to block all ebay junk, since what adsense considers the best paying ad was often ebay since they changed their algorithm...
Stats look better at this point, but I guess I shouldn't jump to any conclusion at least before the end of the day.

I've noticed the targetting for ads has been a bit off the last few days and seems to be causing clicks to decrease and strange EPC behavior on various channels - some up some down more than usual.

Fortunately I don't get any of that any more since I revamped my Adsense last month.

I've noticed the targetting for ads has been a bit off the last few days

Mine are absolutely spot on, very impressive, however I keep wondering whether the leaderboard rotating ads between 1, 2, 3 and 4 units is having a negative impact. Until yesterday it hadn't appeared to do so...just a mere speculation on my part that one.

If everything goes back to "normal" today I'll put it down to HST..a hot and sweaty Thursday in the UK!

My CTR was down by about 30% and although page impressions were up about twenty percent I only made about 50% of the revenue that I made on the preceeding days.

I am also wondering whether the fact that my 300x250 is now showing only 2 ads whenever I check it as opposed to 4 previously is having an impact.

I'm going to start playing with the filtering tool as I haven't tried it before.

My CTR was way down yesterday too - page impressions and traffic were normal. I've been blocking Ebay for a while so that's not the problem here, nothing unusual in the ads that are showing ...

Thursday was strange for me too. I normally look for the weekend dip to start Friday afternoon, but it seemed to have started Thursday morning. Add to the the fact that it seemed that the stats were slow to update. Strange all-around. It looks like what happens when targeting is off, but I haven't checked that.

The same thing happened for me last week though, and I figured it might have something to do with school starting in the States. Not sure how this effects clicks, but holidays often have the same effect.

Good grief...what is happening?

My EPC has literally halved in the first 5 hours of this morning!

Ads, Page impressions and CTR normal...who's been tweaking what and where?

hint: visit the AdWords forum

I had a quick look however it's plainly ridiculous that we should be having to chase around like this to ascertain who's tweaking what and where.

I have an international business to run and if Gooooooogle cannot keep me appraised of what is occurring more easily than trawling through forums then they will shortly be removed from my sites...again.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until Google's end of business on Sunday night and then I shall make the decision if the EPC has not recovered.

from a bad thursday, today seems to be normal for an august Friday for me. Most channels getting good EPC - now if I could only get some more visitors.

OptiRex
Its strange the same here on 1 specific site CTR dropped by about 40% seems to correspond to only 2 adds displayed on a 300 X 250 instead of 4 adds .

On other sites different display size used all as per prev ctr ecpm etc and full adds shown hoping its a bug with adsense will give big G couple of days then change adds size to resolve

Strange, I had an excellent thursday - nearly record.

Then today... I'm barely pulling in nickels. I'm having another record CTR day - but I could be making just as much with pop can returns at this point in the day.

further hint: Major changes to the AdWords bidding system and pricing algorithms were introduced a few days ago.

In the AdWords forum, see in particular the thread:

Google AdWords Pricing Change Goes Into Affect [sic]

[webmasterworld.com...]

If it's any consolation, the AdWords advertisers are in an uproar, too.

I also have very stable stats.

Yesterday I had the same impressions and CTR as normal but I doubled what I usually make per day. Haven't had a day that good in a few months.

Yikes!

My two main AdLinks channels EPC today are showing -59.63% and -67.38% over the month's average and yesterday was a completely "normal" EPC for them.

I need a massive dump of some description to recover from this position today since I've already had 20%+ of my normal day's impressions and clicks.

The AdLinks channels only have until midnight tonight, not Sunday!

I had a horrendous Thursday too - down 30% from expected level. The CTR and EPC were to blame. It came right after a terrific Wednesday, with no changes to the site whatsoever. Definitely another G algo trial, in my opinion.

My CTR yesterday was at the bottom of the range for this month. But traffic was at the high end, and epc was up a bit, so the day ended ok.

I suspect that until advertizers get fully adjusted to the Adwords changes things are likely to be a little chaotic.

Right now it's a little hard to tell how those changes are going to affect publishers in the end.

It certainly makes interesting reading leaving everyone in limboland not knowing what on earth is going on with a public beta testing!

Yeah...I know it says more than that however the gist is it looks like an almighty public screw-up!

Do you use Adwords?

If so, how do you think the effects have changed your bidding etc. since I read that some guys were thinking they could be saving several hundred Dollars a day with these changes?

My average cost in adwords is now only 4 cents with several 3 cent and 2 cent clicks. Great on that end for me but... I fail to see how this benefits google or adsense publishers (which I am one as well and have seen drastic reduction in earnings since the 15th) So my costs are down, my earning are down, and my profit magin is WAY down. I don't get it.

For AdWords folks... this is probably killing people who are selling content.

My CTR is through the roof, but my EPC is not worth having right now.

Thursday was my best day this month - page views normal, clicks up a bit, maybe 20% over the usual, but epc much higher than normal accross several channels.

Today is shaping up very good too for a Friday. If they are making changes, I like 'em. :)

This was what I thought in the last couple of days but I change my mind now. In the long run, it costs more to run AdWords. The KWs I used to get over 100 clicks a day at 20 cents, now they're inactive and required a minimum bid of $0.30 to activate. The minimum bid is changing by hour not by day. It's crazy.

seeing the same for yesterday - similar today but not as bad. EPC down quite dramatically.

I run adwords as well - if you want to you can now blast cheap ads into less related keyword areas and not have to worry as much about the CTR as previously(doesn't work as a strategy for what I do with Adwords) - suspect that is what we are seeing. Basically these low paying keywords should be mopping up the sops in low CTR areas - personally I expect CPC to rise once advertisers get use to the new system - or maybe the algo's need time to catch up.
