Running an Image Only Ad Test

Just to see if it's any good

Since this now an option, I thought I'd give it a whirl and just added a medium rectangle for images only at the bottom of my pages. I'll see how the day progresses. Anyone else trying it?

Please can you tell us the setting steps for that?

Thanks!

Ah, I see they now allow image only ads. Before, you could either choose text ads only, or image & text ads, but not image ads alone.

I will do some testing and see how image ads perform as well.

It's been a couple of hours since I added the "image only" ad. I just checked my channel stats and found that it is indeed earning cents without ever being clicked. I guess every penny counts.

That should be an interesting experiment. I'm still getting a lot of "ebay-type" generic ads, so maybe that's a good option.

Just added a test myself.

I want to do it but some categories seem to lack advertisers as I see only PSAs while certain sections of the same site are showing good image ads.

What will Google do to enforce placement of CPM ads? An ad "below the fold" will typically get fewer eyeballs than one above the fold, and should be priced differently.

Mine's not. Not so far anyway.

Jenstar... what are your results so far?

Can anyone tell yet if image only ads are all CPM?

The image ad seems to be a no-show much of the time, and maybe it's only the purple pill ad that has any CPM attached to it. Might be still in testing phase. Probably too soon to be able to tell much about how well it will work.

Just added image only to one of my site. Are these image only ads the NEW CPM program everone is talking about?

Someone mentioned earning pennies without ads being clicked on. I have over 100 impressions so far but not seeing any revenues kicking in yet.

I added image ads to pages with low clicks but high number of impressions. Currently, it's a blank.

We'll see how it goes after a couple of days.

I tested the image ad very quickly and didn't like what i see. It's crowding my page, so i decided to remove it.

I'm now 25+ hours into this test on one of my sites using the 300x250 rectangle set for images only. I did look at a few pages myself but I've been spending the bulk of my time working on a different site (and reading this forum). My observations so far are:

1. On the few pages that I personally viewed, only one image ad shown was not for the "purple pill". That one image ad was of very poor quality.

2. There is indeed a value attached to showing the image ad. However, since my site wasn't the only site that has been run over by the purple pill, I believe that that the purple pill image ad is being used for testing purposes. The CPM is less than a dime for it at this time and it has had over 1,000 views.

3. It has not received any clicks. None. Zip-point-zero.

4. The purple pill image ad at this size appears to have 3 variations: 2 are static and one is animated.

I'll keep the test rolling for a while out of pure curiosity.

Does anybody have any positive input regarding this new feature?

I know I don't. But i'd like to hear more of it first.

No luck!

After 5K impressions with approx 3 clicks I took it off my sites.

I'm going ahead and running a 468x60 test... though not optimistic about having any relevant advertising banners to show...

This isn't as a part of the new CPM program though is it?

google now allows you to show "image only" ads - which is what i'm testing... the banners would be a mix of PPC and CPM - showing the "better performing" banners over time...

Though it is VERY early in the game so will take awhile to see what happens / how effctive / worthy the banners will be... especially the 468x60... do the big advertisers still use those?

There is no way i'm going the skyscraper / massive wide formats... but at least now have a reliable CPM / PPC banner ad serving system i can use and manage for my local clients... -O>

468X60 banner.
Hot spot.

12 hours - 2 clicks.
few cents.

I think I'll remove it.
But what is good now - this image adspace
not wasting good high paying ads even if it is
first ADSENSe space on the page

Test terminated. Results poor and not worth the space it took. Zip-point-zero clicks, only impressions that weren't worth squat.

Funny thing I noticed during the test: one of the "purple pill" ads has a typo in the URL - purpepill.com - which leads nowhere.

Can anybody explain to me if this image-only-ads is paid based on cost-per-impression? Or is it still based on Pay-per-click? Or mixture of both?

I'm rather confused because my "Image-only" channel shows zero earnings despite having thousands of impressions.

Seige, it might depend on the image ad shown. I strongly suspect that the "purple pill" image ad is being used for testing the upcoming CPM system. I really don't know any other way to find out how the image ads perform except by setting up one adunit to only show image ads. For me, it is a failure as it stands right now.

Are you sure the 'image ads only' is for CPM? I've got about 1000 impressions with no cents, no clicks.

Nope. I've no way to know. With one exception (one image ad that looked sooo bad that a 4 year old could've made it better) I only saw the "purple pill" ads. That was feeding a few cents each day my way with a CPM of about a dime with over 4,000 impressions of it.

4000 for a dime? You've got to be kidding. That's worst than any other regular CPM advertisings.

I know that for every 1000 impressions, you'll get at least 5-50 cents.

I took my banner ads off as well when didn't earn a cent... the banner ads are mixed PPC and CPM - and at the moment there are no CPM ads - at least for my keywords...

The "general public" AdWords advertisers do not yet have access to the new features such as CPM...

I tried putting image only ads for the 120x600 on the right side. It shows a lot of good banners but still revenue may be a little less. Not so sure because i only run this for 2 days. May need more time.

I'm rather confused because my "Image-only" channel shows zero earnings despite having thousands of impressions.

Image-only channel means you have created a custom channel?

Yeap, a custom channel just for "Image-Only" ads.

I wonder what Jenstar have to say about it. Please help us clear out confusions. Please.
